Harpists are considered to be one of the most elegant and poised musicians in the industry. These huge instruments are carefully plucked and played by these talented musicians and they produce an angelic and smooth tone. Harpists are one of the greatest additions to orchestras without a doubt. But who are the most famous harpists in the world?


Nancy Allen

Allen was born to a music teacher and she is a popular American harpist. She won many international competitions at a young age, proving her proficiency as a harp player. She even won the prestigious Israel International Harp Competition in 1973 and has been the Principal Harpist of the New York Philharmonic. She taught for 20 years and from that, she has tutored many successful students. SHe now serves as head of the harp departments at the Juilliard School and Aspen Music Festival and School. She had also headed the harp department at the Yale School of Music.


Dr. Alfredo Rolando Ortiz

Dr. Ortiz is a world-renowned soloist of the Paraguayan harp. He has composed and performed many genres of music (classical, folk, and popular music) of many countries before people of all ages and backgrounds. His multicultural harp repertoire contains forty albums and several harping books as well as articles.His “Venezolana for Five Pedal Harps” is one of the favorite harp ensembles in the world. His composition performed by 232 harpists during the 2008 Tenth World Harp Congress broke the Guinness World Record of the largest harp ensemble.


Yolanda Kondonassis

Kondonassis debuted her music career at age 18 and has now become known as the most recorded classical harpist. She is a professor of harp and is regarded as an extremely brilliant and expressive player with an even greater technique. She has written several books and has played as a concerto soloist in recitals around the globe. Apart from that, she has attained various prestigious awards such as the Cleveland Arts Prize and some of the best honors in the New York Philharmonic National Young Artists Competition.
